I did this Shimano Twin Power 14 000 for Louis Nel from LN plumbing who fishes for Tygerberg in the WP.

For those who do not know what a twin power looks like inside here is the opportunity to see why folks see this as the alternative to the Stella reels.

I gave it a proper service after ultrasonic cleaning the entire reel. You will in some places note some corrosion like under the drag tension knob and the handle bearings, all areas found were treated and sorted out.

The gearing on this reel is really strong as is the drag and the reel has decent line capacity. it is a compact reel with big fish fighting ability(shark).

One really wants a compact reel like this with a smaller foot print but big heart so you can fish for big fish with comfort especially.

You can look at the pictures and compare the before to after photos and see the difference. Have a look at the build and the build quality as well. Shimano has a well proven track record on grinders, mulitpliers and tuna reels for good reason. the twin power is one of these reasons also.
Well thought our, well designed and well made. Very suited to our type of angling conditions and angling style as well.

Here are some pics of a TN40 i got in to service.

The reel turned but under protest. I noted the handle lock plate screw had broken off, there was lots of corrosion outside as well as inside, bearings were noisy and only the anti reverse dogs were locking and not the AR roller. I had to strip the reel in an unconventional way to be able to get it part.

Have a look at the corrosion where the handle mounts on the driveshaft, i had to use a puller to remove this with great difficulty. The AR roller bearing was rusted, the bearings were rusted, the driveshaft had rusted and the AR sleeve had rusted stuck onto the driveshaft as well. Also see the corrosion on the main gear and pinion gear(the green mass).

This was a challenge but i am happy to report i was able to fix all these issues successfully.

A ultrasonic clean, corrosion removal, certain items were polished on the lathe, a new AR bearing was fitted, new bearings replaced the rusted ones. I tapped a new hole for a stainless handle lock plate screw on the handle blank.

With lots of TLC and skill this reel was ready for years on use once again. The TN range of reels are awesome even today still and i rate them very highly. The 40 and 50 TN models are of the strongest reels you will find, They are built to tackle large fish with ease, the gearing, drags, spool shaft diameters, and general build is all suited for heavy use in the long term.

Have a look at the before and the after pictures to get an idea of my level and class of workmanship.

After the holidays reels need to be serviced im sure for lots of anglers especially after wading and all the wind we have been having which blows sand into the insides of reels.

Salti and Crew

We left at 3 30 on Saturday morning 23 January 2018 for a day’s fishing on the Alphard’s what a day.

Arriving at the bank we passed a long line buoy and on closer inspection found a Turtle entangled in the lines connected to the buoy with great difficulty we managed to free the turtle.

The poor creature was completely exhausted and it took quite some time for it to dive down and swim away.

During our day traveling to the 45’s we found another set of longline buoy’s and a school of young Dorado beneath it fortunately no creatures entangled in the lines.

The possible activity of long liners in the vicinity of the Alphard’s and 45’s is a chilling thought and we can only hope it is not so but still witnessing what these fishing methods can cause is frightening. Let’s hope the buoy’s drifted down with the warm Agulhas Current that brings warm water from the east coast of Africa.

We counted 23 turtle’s during the day and found them in a area were the max water temp was 25.3 deg C it was really amazing and never before have we witnessed this amount of turtle activity ever. ... See more
